SUMMARY:Reflective Supervision Group with Bárbara Godoy 2026
DESCRIPTION:All therapists have an original project\, an intention\, a gut feeling\, the reason why they decided to practice. Through training many things are learnt but often this profound and personal purpose can be clouded. This weekly group provides a safe space that promotes a non-judgmental approach. We aim to create a kind of intimacy where practitioners can see themselves clearly whilst getting the support to be who they are. Once the practitioner’s own individual style is discovered a process to master what will become their own personal approach begins. The group is the supervisor\, a gentle but firm mirror to observe our work with perspective and generate understanding of the client’s process by taking into account ourselves as co-creators of the therapeutic encounter. A creative and uplifting weekly group that aims to strengthen the therapists’ own existential awareness. \nBárbara Godoy M.A.\, Adv. Dip. Exi. Psy. Existential Psychotherapist Group Leader\, Counsellour\, Lecturer and Supervisor\, UKCP accredited\, SEA Professional Member\, Director of Therapy Harley Street. Bárbara’s academic contributions in London since 2008 include lecturing and researching on the theory and practice of Phenomenological Existential Therapy on Doctorate\, MA and professional courses at the School of Psychotherapy and Counselling Psychology\, Regent’s University and the New School of Psychotherapy and Counselling directed by Emmy van Deurzen. Bárbara has facilitated and designed therapeutic Group Work since 1997. She brought her earliest workshop: “Experiences” to large groups in The Netherlands\, Italy\, France\, UK and Argentina. These awareness-intensive processes are a legacy of the human potential movement (HPM) of the 1960s\, with techniques such as AUM Meditation Marathons\, Psychodrama\, Bioenergetics and Primal Feelings work. \nFee: £1260 (or £450 per term) \nFridays Group 2 pm to 3 pm \nWinter Term:\n23 and 30 January\n6\, 13\, 20 and 27 February\n6\, 13\, 20 and 27 March \nSpring Term: \n1\, 8\, 15\, 22 and 29 May\n12\, 19 and 26 June\n3 and 10 July \nAutumn Term:\n25 September\n2\, 9\, 16\, 23 and 30 October\n6\, 13\, 20 and 27 November \nBook Now

SUMMARY:Advanced Supervision Group with Prof Ernesto Spinelli 2026
DESCRIPTION:These Master Workshops provide the opportunity to ‘look again’ at our practice and re-view assumptions and expectations regarding being a therapist. “Group supervision sessions seek to provide participants with a safe\, yet challenging\, space\, to consider and address the issues that arise for them when discussing their own\, or another participant’s\, experience of being a therapist. \nGroup supervision can be a valuable and enriching experience for all participants since even though the focus may be on a particular supervisee’s account\, it is likely that all participants will discover broader issues and concerns that resonate with their own encounters with clients.” \nProfessor Ernesto Spinelli was Chair of the Society for Existential Analysis between 1993 and 1999 and is a Life Member of the Society. His writings\, lectures and seminars focus on the application of existential phenomenology to the arenas of therapy\, supervision\, psychology\, and executive coaching. He is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society (BPS) as well as an APECS-accredited executive coach and coaching supervisor. In 2000\, he was the Recipient of the BPS Division of Counselling Psychology Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Profession. And in 2019\, Ernesto received the BPS Award for Distinguished Contribution to Practice. His most recent book\, Practising Existential Therapy: The Relational World 2nd edition (Sage\, 2015) has been widely praised as a major contribution to the advancement of existential theory and practice. Living up to the existential dictum that life is absurd\, Ernesto is also the author of an on-going series of Private Eye novels\, the most recent of which\, Everything Has A Price\, was published in 2023. \nAll dates:  Saturdays 24 January\, 28 February\, 21 March\, 18 April\, 2 May\, 6 June\, 18 July\, 17 October\, 7 November and 5 December 2025 \nFee: £1260 the whole year (£140 per session) \nTime: Saturdays from 10 am to 1 pm (UK time) \nVenue: Online – Zoom \nBook Now\n\nBPS award for distinguished contribution “An internationally-recognised leader in existential therapy and coaching psychology\, Professor Ernesto Spinelli developed and taught the first psychology undergraduate and PhD programmes to focus on counselling and psychotherapy research. He has contributed to a growing interest in\, and professional appreciation of\, existential therapeutic techniques. Professor Spinelli publications and textbooks are standard reading for many psychotherapy and coaching training programmes around the world. His latest book\, Practising Existential Therapy: The Relational World\, 2nd edition (2015)\, was identified as the most influential contemporary text on existential therapeutic practice.” BPS \n\nI find the supervision groups most helpful and supportive on a practical level. \nEmilia\, Integrative Psychotherapist\nProfessor Spinelli is an experienced supervisor who is able to impart his wisdom and knowledge in an authentic manner. \nJanet\, Existential Psychotherapist\nExcellent. Thoroughly enjoyable. Feels safe\, contained and exploratory. \nRuth\, Psychotherapist

SUMMARY:Advanced Applied Supervision Group with Dr. Betty Cannon 2026
DESCRIPTION:Betty Cannon\, the author of Sartre and Psychoanalysis\, offers a playful\, active\, experientially based form of supervision that is deeply and specifically grounded in the philosophy of Sartre. \nThis group is a place to hone skills and consider important issues of therapy from the perspective of existential philosophy. Combining the leader’s experience with the wisdom of the group fosters an active experientially oriented and interpersonally open way of doing supervision. It includes role-playing clients as well as looking at stuck points in therapy – stuck points that may belong to the therapist or supervisor as well as the client. It uses body-oriented as well as verbal interventions to get beyond words to the pre-reflective bodily-lived intentionality of all three. \nApplied Existential Supervision is rooted in a psychotherapeutic approach developed and taught by Betty Cannon at the Boulder Psychotherapy Institute for more than 30 years. Thoroughly and specifically grounded in the philosophy of Sartre\, Applied Existential Psychotherapy also draws inspiration from Gestalt Therapy\, Rogerian person-centred therapy\, body-oriented psychotherapy\, and classical and contemporary psychoanalysis. Betty agrees with British object relations theorist D.W. Winnicott that psychotherapy is (or ought to be) a very special form of ‘two people playing together. When one of them\, hopefully\, the client\, is unable to play\, therapy becomes two people learning to play together. \nBoth Winnicott and Sartre view play as arising in what Winnicott calls the ‘transitional space’ between the subjective and objective worlds. This is the place where\, phenomenologically speaking\, this world becomes my world – or your world. Focusing on this transitional space allows us to move from doing therapy in what Sartre calls the ‘spirit of seriousness’ (which is the deterministic mechanistic approach of a great deal of contemporary psychotherapy) to what Betty has elsewhere called the ‘spirit of play’. It is a perspective that encourages us to recognize and support our own and our client’s freedom – in situation. And it can help open us to new more creative and authentic possibilities for living\, loving\, and being with each other. \nBecause taking this perspective makes room for the radically new and the unpredictable and relieves us of the burden of trying to ‘fix’ our clients\, it is less tiring and less likely to produce therapist burnout. It can also make therapy more satisfying\, joyful and exhilarating for both client and therapist. But therapy done in the spirit of play becomes at the same time less certain and predictable. We cannot know the outcome of the therapy because our client is free. For this reason\, approaching therapy (and supervision) in this way can be anxiety-provoking or even terrifying. Moving from the spirit of seriousness to the spirit of play makes us aware of the lightness as well as the heaviness of being – and that can be challenging as well liberating. \nOf course\, no one can live with the full awareness of freedom\, responsibility\, and possibility all the time. The temptation to bad faith is universal for all humans\, including therapists. But if the challenge to do so at least some of the time appeals\, please come play with us in Applied Existential Supervision Group. \nBetty Cannon\, PhD\, licensed psychologist\, is the founder of Applied Existential Psychotherapy (AEP). Her book on Sartre and Psychoanalysis (1991) is often considered a classic in the field\, as Ernesto Spinelli predicted it would be. She has published many articles and chapters on existential philosophy\, psychology\, and psychotherapy. Betty’s mentor\, Hazel E. Barnes\, translated Sartre into English and was the world’s foremost Sartre scholar until her death in 2008. Betty is Hazel’s literary executor\, and her book on Sartre is dedicated to Hazel. She is currently working on a new book: In the Spirit of Play: Applied Existential Psychotherapy. \nBetty is the president and founder of the Boulder Psychotherapy Institute\, an emerita professor of the Colorado School of Mines\, a senior adjunct professor at Naropa University\, and a member of the editorial boards of three international journals: Sartre Studies International\, Existential Analysis\, and Review of Existential Psychology and Psychiatry. In addition to Applied Existential Psychotherapy\, she has recently introduced an Applied Existential Coaching Class at the Boulder Psychotherapy Institute. \nBetty has taught AEP to hundreds (if not thousands) of students over the past thirty-plus years. She has also done therapy with individuals\, couples\, and groups in Boulder for the past forty years\, as well as presented at many professional conferences and workshops. She is particularly interested in an existential approach to relationships and groups and leads 15 to 20 groups (therapy\, practice\, process\, and supervision) each month. \n\n\n\n\nAll dates: Saturdays 17 January\, 14 February\, 14 March\, 11 April\, 9 May\, 13 June\, 11 July\, 10 October\, 14 November and 12 December \nFee: £1260 the whole year (£140 per session) \nTime: Saturdays from 3 pm to 6 pm (UK time) \nVenue: Online – Zoom \nCPD by Therapy Harley Street \nBook Now

SUMMARY:Advanced Supervision Group in Therapoetics with Dr. Todd DuBose 2026
DESCRIPTION:Explores the hermeneutical-phenomenological practice of heeding lived meaning.  Heeding is more than just hearing or listening; it is discerning and taking in what matters to those seeking our care regarding their lived situations. Sometimes what is meaningful is explicitly said or shown\, sometimes it is pre-reflective\, sometimes it is inconspicuous. Heeding is neither correcting what is deficient\, nor translating symptoms into conclusive interpretations.  Instead\, the therapoet resides in a clearing\, or space\, where what shows itself can do so as it is\, in its own way\, without explanation\, justification or expectation. We companion with others and follow phenomena of concern wherever they take us. Participants in this group will inevitably be called to explore what matters to them about what matters to others. \n \nDr. Todd DuBose is a world-renowned\, Distinguished Full Professor at The Chicago School’s College of Professional Psychology. He teaches philosophical foundations of practices of care\, ethics\, loss and mourning\, psychology and spirituality\, psychopathology\, among other courses\, all from a human science perspective\, and with a particular focus on therapoetic care. He is a licensed psychologist\, supervisor\, consultant\, and former chaplain\, with over thirty-five years of experience. He holds degrees in continental and comparative philosophy of religion and existential-hermeneutical-phenomenological human science clinical psychology and integrates these approaches as a way of caring for such experiences as the impossible (no way out\, boundary or limited situations)\, extreme experiences (such as psychosis\, nihilism\, suicidal and homicidal ideation)\, and the taboo (the places no one wants to go: the unwanted and unacceptable\, unsayable\, unforgiveable\, forbidden\, and irreverent). He regularly presents workshops in several international venues such as the Circulo de Estudios en Psicoterapia Existential\, in Mexico City\, Mexico\, the Zhi Mian International Institute of Existential-Humanistic Psychology in Dali\, China\, and the Centre for Existential Practice in Melbourne\, Australia. He is widely published and has written on caring for others in very difficult situations including traumatic loss\, surviving the COVID-19 pandemic\, and meaninglessness. He has also written a short dialogue with Miles Groth\, edited by Loray Daws\, called\, Dialogues on The Soul of Existential Therapy\, published by The Society for Existential Analysis. Most of all\, he considers himself simply a fellow human being. \nAll dates: 10 January\, 21 February\, 28 March\, 16 May\, 27 June\, 25 July\, 26 September\, 24 October\, 21 November\, 19 December.  \nFee: £1260 the whole year (£140 per session) \nTime: Saturdays from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm (UK Time) \nVenue: Online – Zoom \nBook Now

SUMMARY:Advanced Supervision Group with Prof Ernesto Spinelli 2025
\nAll dates:  Saturdays 25 January\, 22 February\, 22 March\, 12 April\, 3 May\, 21 June\, 19 July\, 25 October\, 15 November and 13 December 2025 \nFee: £1260 the whole year (£140 per session) \nTime: Saturdays from 10 am to 1 pm (UK time) \nVenue: Online – Zoom \n\nBPS award for distinguished contribution “An internationally-recognised leader in existential therapy and coaching psychology\, Professor Ernesto Spinelli developed and taught the first psychology undergraduate and PhD programmes to focus on counselling and psychotherapy research.

SUMMARY:Reflective Supervision Group with Bárbara Godoy 2025
Dip. Exi. SUMMARY:Advanced Supervision Group in Therapoetics with Dr. Todd DuBose 2025
\nAll dates: 18 January\, 15 February\, 15 March\, 17 May\, 7 June\, 5 July\, 20 September\, 18 October\, 22 November\, 20 December.  \nFee: £1260 the whole year (£140 per session) \nTime: Saturdays from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm (UK Time) \nVenue: Online – Zoom

SUMMARY:Advanced Applied Supervision Group with Dr. Betty Cannon
\n\n\n\n\nAll dates: Saturdays 11 January\, 8 February\, 8 March\, 5 April\, 10 May\, 14 June\, 13 September\, 11 October\, 8 November and 6 December \nFee: £1260 the whole year (£140 per session) \nTime: Saturdays from 3 pm to 6 pm (UK time) \nVenue: Online – Zoom \nCPD by Therapy Harley Street

SUMMARY:Reflective Supervision Group with Bárbara Godoy
Dip. Exi. SUMMARY:Advanced Existential Supervision Group
\nThey provide the opportunity to ‘look again’ at their practice and re-view their assumptions and expectations regarding being a therapist and doing therapy. Group supervision can be a valuable and enriching experience for all participants since even though the focus may be on a particular supervisee’s account\, it is likely that all participants will discover broader issues and concerns that resonate with their own encounters with clients.” \nProfessor Ernesto Spinelli was Chair of the Society for Existential Analysis between 1993 and 1999 and is a Life Member of the Society. \nAll dates:  Saturdays 27 January\, 24 February\, 23 March\, 27 April\, 18 May\, 22 June\, 20 July\, 26 October\, 23 November and 14 December \nFee: £1260 the whole year (£140 per session) \nTime: Saturdays from 10 am to 1 pm (UK time) \nVenue: Online – Zoom \nBOOK HERE > \n\nBPS award for distinguished contribution “An internationally-recognised leader in existential therapy and coaching psychology\, Professor Ernesto Spinelli developed and taught the first psychology undergraduate and PhD programmes to focus on counselling and psychotherapy research. SUMMARY:Advanced Applied Supervision Groupwith Dr Betty Cannon
\n\n\n\n\nAll dates: Saturdays 13 January\, 10 February\, 9 March\, 13 April\, 11 May\, 8 June\, 14 September\, 12 October\, 9 November and 7 December \nFee: £1260 the whole year (£140 per session) \nTime: Saturdays from 3 pm to 6 pm (UK time) \nVenue: Online – Zoom \nBOOK HERE > \nCPD by Therapy Harley Street

SUMMARY:Existential Dialogue between Prof Ernesto Spinelli and Bárbara Godoy. Topic: Spirituality
DESCRIPTION:Existential Dialogues: The therapist in the mirror. Ten live dialogues between Prof Ernesto Spinelli and International Existential Therapists based on case studies illustrating key existential topics. \n2 December “Dreams” with Prof Ernesto Spinelli and Bárbara Godoy \n“What is spirituality? Nietzsche says that with the emergence of monotheism our imagination about opening our possibilities of being is inhibited. I had a funny conversation with a colleague from one of the CPD groups\, who was upset about a certain client challenging binary gender identification. Perhaps the current emphasis on diversity is an opportunity to mobilise a different relation to spirituality. In this dialogue\, I will share my reflections about the encounter with this colleague to explore my own assumptions about the tyranny of monotheism and my own perceptions about the importance of the ‘Panthe’ and the ‘Poly’ dimensions of Being. Can Spinoza’s god be a point of reference on the issue of spirituality for existential therapists? Should we consider studies of pre-monotheist traditions a valid subject or a possible foundation in existential training?” Barbara Godoy \nBárbara Godoy M.A.\, Adv. Dip. Exi. Psy\, UKCP accredited Psychotherapist and Supervisor\, MBACP and SEA – Director of Therapy Harley Street. Bárbara’s academic experience in London since 2008 includes lecturing and researching the theory and practice of Phenomenological Existential Therapy on Doctorate\, MA and professional courses at the School of Psychotherapy and Counselling Psychology\, Regent’s University and the New School of Psychotherapy and Counselling directed by Emmy van Deurzen. Bárbara has facilitated therapeutic Group Work internationally since 1997. The question about the meaning of Being-Woman was the topic of her thesis completed in 2005 and evolved into two main Women’s Groups: “Nine muses” and “Four Seasons” which she leads in addition to her individual private practice. Currently\, as the clinical director of THS\, Bárbara leads a team of over 20 professional practitioners in the area of Psychological services and Wellbeing consultancy. Bárbara is also founder-director of THS’s Personal Development and CPD Programmes. \nProfessor Ernesto Spinelli was Chair of the Society for Existential Analysis between 1993 and 1999 and is a Life Member of the Society. SUMMARY:Existential Dialogue between Prof Ernesto Spinelli and Prof Robert Romanyshyn. Topic: Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Existential Dialogues: The therapist in the mirror. Ten live dialogues between Prof Ernesto Spinelli and International Existential Therapists based on case studies illustrating key existential topics. \n11 November “Dreams” with Prof Ernesto Spinelli and Dr Robert Romanyshyn \n“My approach to dreams is an imaginal one\, which draws not only on the traditions of existential phenomenology and depth psychology but also on my work over the years with theatre folk. In these contexts\, I regard the dream as a play performed in the night theatre of soul\, staged in the far county of a different world. As such\, I begin not with interpretations of what a dream might mean. Instead\, I begin with the dream as a display of the possibility of possibility\, and\, as such\, emphasise that the mood of the dream is not indicative but subjunctive\, which is the sense that Freud had in describing a dream in terms of the wish\, but which his method of interpretation ignored. Then\, through a series of procedures developed over the years\, I invite the dreamer to rehearse or try on the different characters presented in the dream by embodying and enacting them within its setting. Who does one become and how does one act in a different country? Using this approach as the first step in which the dream is making sense of the dreamer\, the second step of making sense of the dream via interpretations can be taken.” Prof Robert Romanyshyn \nRobert D. Romanyshyn\, an Affiliate Member of The Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts\, a Fellow of the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture\, and a Professor Emeritus of Clinical Psychology at Pacifica Graduate Institute was recently awarded the Distinguished Lifetime Contributions to Humanistic Psychology Award from the Society for Humanistic Psychology APA Division 32. He has published eight books and numerous articles in psychology\, philosophy\, education\, and literary journals. He is also a published poet and has written a one-act play about Frankenstein. In 2009 he created a multi-media DVD entitled Antarctica: Inner Journeys in the Outer World\, which offers a psychological reflection on the melting polar ice. In addition to online seminars and interviews\, he has given lectures and workshops at universities and professional societies in the U.S.\, Europe\, Australia\, South Africa\, Canada\, and New Zealand. \nProfessor Ernesto Spinelli was Chair of the Society for Existential Analysis between 1993 and 1999 and is a Life Member of the Society. Ten live dialogues between Prof Ernesto Spinelli and International Existential Therapists based on case studies illustrating key existential topics. \n28 October “Identity” with Prof Ernesto Spinelli and Dr Yaqui Martinez \n“Our culture has built an idol: personal identity. From an early age we are taught (in subtle ways) to build a sense of ourselves that is stable\, that shows continuity with the past\, and that ensures permanence in the future. However\, existence is a changing and mobile flux that constantly challenges us and demands to renew our sense of identity. What or who are we really? Can we find a way to define ourselves that can remain stable in the face of the constant changes of existence? What elements do we have to define ourselves? What does it mean to be identical with ourselves? Perhaps we need to rethink Sartre’s comment: “They say we are made of clay and mud; but rather we are made of wind” Dr Yaqui Martinez \nDr Yaqui Andrés Martínez Robles is a psychologist with PsyD in Psychotherapy. He has specialities in Gestalt Therapy\, Music Therapy\, Transpersonal Psychology\, Narrative and postmodern therapies and Social Constructionism. He is the author of four books focused on the existential perspective. Yaqui is the founder of the Circle of Studies in Existential Therapy\, in Mexico City. He teaches existential-phenomenological psychology and therapy in Mexico and different countries of South America. He is the current president of the Latin American Association of Existential Psychotherapy. He works in private practice as an existential-phenomenological therapist and coach. \nProfessor Ernesto Spinelli was Chair of the Society for Existential Analysis between 1993 and 1999 and is a Life Member of the Society. His writings\, lectures and seminars focus on the application of existential phenomenology to the arenas of therapy\, supervision\, psychology\, and executive coaching. He is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society (BPS) as well as an APECS accredited executive coach and coaching supervisor. In 2000\, he was the Recipient of BPS Division of Counselling Psychology Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Profession. Living up to the existential dictum that life is absurd\, Ernesto is also the author of an on-going series of Private Eye novels. \nVenue: Online Zoom \nRead the full programme here >

SUMMARY:Existential Dialogue between Prof Ernesto Spinelli and Dr Betty Cannon. Topic: Play
DESCRIPTION:Existential Dialogues: The therapist in the mirror. Ten live dialogues between Prof Ernesto Spinelli and International Existential Therapists based on case studies illustrating key existential topics. \n8 July “Play” with Prof Ernesto Spinelli and Dr Betty Cannon \n“Play and an attitude toward life that I call the ‘spirit of play’ lie at the heart of my approach to therapy\, which is deeply and specifically grounded in the philosophy of Sartre. As Sartre describes it\, play is the ‘least possessive attitude’ — an activity that ‘strips the real of its reality and thereby allows us to take ourselves less seriously. It is deeply and intimately connected with our freedom. My favourite psychoanalyst\, D. W. Winnicott\, who was also a paediatrician\, described the process of psychotherapy itself as ‘two people playing together’ — or\, where one of them is unable to play\, learning to play together. I agree. I view psychotherapy as a very particular form of play that invites the client (and perhaps also the therapist) to move away from what Sartre calls the ‘spirit of seriousness’ in the direction of the ‘spirit of play’. As I see it\, it would be great if the whole field of psychotherapy could become more ‘playful’ and less ‘serious’ than it sometimes appears to be. In the vignette I will be discussing with Ernesto\, my client is a very ‘serious’ but nice fellow who has forgotten how to play. As we eventually discovered\, he had very good reasons for forgetting\, going back to his earliest childhood. His inability to play and my reaction to it led to an impasse in the therapy. It was the same impasse that he experienced with women outside of therapy\, which was his reason for coming to therapy in the first place. ” Dr Betty Cannon \nBetty Cannon\, PhD\, is a licensed psychologist who has practised and taught in Boulder\, Colorado\, for over 40 years. She is Professor Emerita at the Colorado School of Mines\, Senior Adjunct Professor at Naropa University\, and the founder of the Boulder Psychotherapy Institute\, which has trained mental health professionals in Applied Existential Psychotherapy since 1989. AEP is an existential-psychodynamic approach (founded by Betty) that also has roots in Gestalt therapy\, humanistic psychology (espeillustratingcially the person-centred therapy of Carl Rogers)\, and body-oriented psychotherapy. Betty is a member of the editorial boards of three international journals: Existential Analysis\, Sartre Studies International\, and Review of Existential Psychology and Psychiatry. She is the author of Sartre and Psychoanalysis and numerous articles and chapters on existential therapy. \nProfessor Ernesto Spinelli was Chair of the Society for Existential Analysis between 1993 and 1999 and is a Life Member of the Society. SUMMARY:Existential Dialogue between Prof Ernesto Spinelli and Niki D
DESCRIPTION:Existential Dialogues: The therapist in the mirror. Ten live dialogues between Prof Ernesto Spinelli and International Existential Therapists based on case studies that illustrate key existential topics. \n24 June “Sexuality” with Prof Ernesto Spinelli and Dr Niki D \nSexuality. “Sexuality can awaken us to our interrelated being. A way of knowing ourselves through someone else” (Smith-Pickard) \n“Our unique or ontic expressions of ‘being sexual’ reveal aspects of ourselves and the way in which we respond to the ontological givens of relatedness\, embodiment and uncertainty. The term existential sexuality describes sexuality from an embodied\, relational experience\, where the intersubjective nature of sexuality is emphasised\, rather than reducing sexuality to drives\, physiology or cultural norms. \nOPEN & POLYAMOROUS RELATIONSHIPS \n“We judge what we don’t understand” (unknown source) \nThe co-creation of a unique\, open relationship can be a wonderfully empowering and uniting experience for couples who have been a closed dyad. It can also be intense\, exhausting\, confusing and distressing. In this discussion\, I want to hone in on the specific factors and challenges that may present when one partner is requesting a move to an open or polyamorous relationship and the other is reluctant. Examining different views and assumptions about relationship styles can feel like walking a tightrope\, especially when a client’s unreflected mononormative bias is in the room. It’s a theme that has tripped me up in sessions and one I would like to explore further in this dialogue.” Niki D \nNiki D is an existential psychotherapist with 30 years’ experience in private practice\, statutory and voluntary sectors. She works with individuals and groups\, as a relationship therapist\, supervisor\, CPD trainer and a visiting lecturer at Regents University. She has an MA in Existential Psychotherapy\, a diploma in working with GSRD clients (gender\, sexual and relationship diverse) in Relationship Therapy and additional training in somatic body therapy. She is a clinical associate of Pink Therapy and has recently written a chapter on working with couples opening up their relationship – for the fourth volume in the Pink Therapy series (co-edited by Dominic Davies & Silva Nieves and due to be published in 2023). \nProfessor Ernesto Spinelli was Chair of the Society for Existential Analysis between 1993 and 1999 and is a Life Member of the Society. SUMMARY:Existential Dialogue between Prof Ernesto Spinelli and Dr Greg Madison. Topic: Embodiment
DESCRIPTION:Existential Dialogues: The therapist in the mirror. Ten live dialogues between Prof Ernesto Spinelli and International Existential Therapists based on case studies that illustrate key existential topics. \n20 May “Embodiment” with Prof Ernesto Spinelli and Dr Greg Madison \nEmbodiment. “Existential Psychotherapy\, any therapy\, all of us\, so readily fall back into conceptual forms of thinking and understanding. We can get lost in theory\, philosophy\, and ideologies without checking to see which of these actually resonate with our felt experience of living. If we place our existence first\, then words and concepts become the epi-phenomena and our bodily feelings become the guide to understanding which descriptions work and in exactly what way. We find that the body is not an enclosed subjectivity but the location of a whole system of interactions stretching far beyond the ‘individual’ as usually conceived. If we take embodiment as core to our practice\, then we all become philosophers and poets in a very concrete way.” Dr Greg Madison \nDr. Greg Madison is a Chartered Psychologist\, Associate Fellow of the BPS and Registered existential Psychotherapist (UKCP/EAP). He regularly lectures internationally and teaches workshops in the UK while maintaining a limited private practice online. Greg’s academic studies in psychology began in 1979 when he first learned about the work of the existential philosopher Eugene Gendlin\, and he has been practising as a psychotherapist and Focusing teacher now for over thirty years. He wrote a small book called ‘The End of Belonging’\, exploring the concept of “existential migration” and has edited two books on Focusing-Oriented Psychotherapy as well as co-edited a text on Existential Therapy. Having been exposed to many psychological theories and most of the various models of psychotherapy\, Greg maintains a sceptical perspective regarding our current ‘knowledge’ about psychology\, claims about the meaning of life\, and scientific beliefs that explain existence and human functioning. Greg believes that it is crucial that we remain as open as possible to the complexity of human existence: each person teaches us something universal and also something unique about the everyday dilemmas of being human and the unanswered deeper questions of our place in the universe. In his work\, Greg Madison emphasises what a person concretely experiences moment-by-moment and how in existential work it is our experience that continues to unfold and enrich our understanding of ‘self’ as living process.
