SUMMARY:ADVANCED EXISTENTIAL SUPERVISION GROUP with Prof. Ernesto Spinelli
DESCRIPTION:These Master Workshops provide the opportunity to ‘look again’ at our practice and re-view assumptions and expectations regarding being a therapist. \n“Group supervision sessions seek to provide participants with a safe\, yet challenging\, space\, to consider and address the issues that arise for them when discussing their own\, or another participant’s\, experience of being a therapist. They provide the opportunity to ‘look again’ at their practice and re-view their assumptions and expectations regarding being a therapist and doing therapy. Group supervision can be a valuable and enriching experience for all participants since even though the focus may be on a particular supervisee’s account\, it is likely that all participants will discover broader issues and concerns that resonate with their own encounters with clients.” Prof. Ernesto Spinelli \nProf. Ernesto Spinelli has gained an international reputation as one of the leading contemporary trainers and theorists of existential therapy and\, more recently\, the related areas of coaching\, facilitation and conflict mediation. SUMMARY:FROM FEAR TO INSIGHT: How to Experientialise Your Pandemic Dr Greg Madison
DESCRIPTION:An ONLINE group journey for therapists who want to grow stronger together . \nTen Saturdays 10am to 1pm. Starts 12 September. \nOne-hour lecture led by different guests and followed by two-hour group session with Bárbara Godoy \n\n  \nDr. Greg Madison is a Chartered Psychologist (BPS/HCPC) and Registered existential Psychotherapist (UKCP/EAP) working in private practice in Brighton\, London and also via online media (Skype). Greg’s academic studies in psychology began in 1979. He has been practicing as a psychotherapist and Focusing trainer for over twenty-five years. He is also a registered coaching psychologist\, accredited mediator\, senior lecturer\, supervisor\, author and associate fellow of the British Psychological Society. \nOver the years\, Greg has been exposed to many psychological theories and most of the various models of psychotherapy. These\, sometimes competing theories and models\, suggest that there is still much that we can learn about psychology\, and about life. Greg believes that it is crucial that we remain as open as possible to the complexity of human existence. Each person teaches us a lot about the everyday dilemmas we all encounter throughout life. \nIn his work\, Dr. Madison emphasises what a person concretely experiences and how each of us makes unique sense of how we live. This requires taking account of our cognitive\, behavioral\, emotional\, and relational spheres of being – balancing the intellect and emotions. Through therapy sessions\, we increase our self-awareness and practice specific skills that help us maintain a meaningful balance that expresses how we would really like to live. \nThe whole Programme: \nLife as Experiment & Adventure Manu Bazzano 12 September\nBut What About You? SUMMARY:FROM FEAR TO INSIGHT: Adapting Your Professional Practice: Online Presence with Pat Spink
DESCRIPTION:An ONLINE group journey for therapists who want to grow stronger together . \nTen Saturdays 10am to 1pm. Starts 12 September. \nOne-hour lecture led by different guests and followed by two-hour group session with Bárbara Godoy \n\n  \nPat Spink started off her career with over twenty years in Retail Banking\, firstly on the business side and\, later\, specialising in technical and skills training design and delivery. She then spent ten years as an independent trainer and HR project manager. \nNow a counsellor\, coach\, supervisor and trainer whose core training is Humanistic and Integrative\, rooted in Person-centred\, TA and Gestalt\, she combines this with her prior experience in adult learning and development and her training as a coach and an NLP Master Practitioner. She also brings elements from CPD in various other approaches such as Therapeutic Groupwork\, Existential Therapy\, Short Term Brief Therapy and aspects of CBT. She holds a Diploma in Online Counselling & Psychotherapy and a Diploma in Online Therapeutic Supervision. \nShe offers her clients and supervisees a choice of five ways in which to meet: face to face\, video\, phone\, live chat and email – or a blend of these. She’s aware that she had the luxury of making the transition to online at her own pace which hasn’t been the case for many therapists who have had to adapt much more quickly recently in order to provide continuity of service to their clients during lockdown. \nShe loves the flexibility\, adaptability and additional creativity that providing this range of media has brought to her and her clients\, and is keen to share what she has learned with others. To help them be their best selves (professionally and personally) and to explore what the online world has to offer safely and ethically. \nTo this end\, she recently spent three years with The Academy for Online Counselling & Psychotherapy designing and delivering ACTO-approved Certificate and Diploma courses for therapists and supervisors and has\, more recently\, been developing a series of stand-alone workshops independently. \nThe whole Programme: \nLife as Experiment & Adventure Manu Bazzano 12 September\nBut What About You? SUMMARY:ADVANCED EXISTENTIAL SUPERVISION with Prof.
He is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society (BPS)\, and a United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKPC) registered existential psychotherapist. SUMMARY:WORKING WITH MOMENT-TO-MOMENT EXPERIENCE IN SESSIONS with Dr. Greg Madison
DESCRIPTION:“We will work from ’the body’ backwards to how we think; inverting our usual habit of putting concepts first. The day will centre around the practice of Focusing and the philosophy of Eugene Gendlin to develop an embodied-relational mode of therapy.” Dr Greg Madison \nDr. Greg Madison\, AFBPsS\, UKCP\, EAP\, WCPC\, BPS CPsychol\, HCPC\, EuroPsy – \nDr. Greg Madison is a Chartered Psychologist (BPS) and Registered existential Psychotherapist (UKCP). Greg’s academic studies in psychology began in 1979. He has been practicing as a psychotherapist and Focusing trainer for over twenty-five years. He is also a registered coaching psychologist\, accredited mediator\, senior lecturer\, supervisor\, author and associate fellow of the British Psychological Society.\nOver the years Greg has been exposed to many psychological theories and most of the various models of psychotherapy.

SUMMARY:ADVANCED EXISTENTIAL SUPERVISION with Prof.
Ernesto Spinelli\, Fellow of the British Psychological Society\, (BPS)\, UKCP registered existential psychotherapist and an APECS accredited executive coach and coaching supervisor. SUMMARY:THE LABYRINTH AND THE MASK An Exploration of Nietzsche’s Life-affirming Psychology with Manu Bazzano
DESCRIPTION:“To you\, bold searchers\, tempters\, experimenters\, and whoever has embarked with cunning sails upon terrifying seas” A course comprising of lectures on Nietzsche’s vibrant thought\, with links to Zen\, contemporary psychotherapies and philosophies and featuring experiential exercises and meditations. \n“What would it be like to apply Nietzsche’s ideas to the art of psychotherapy and\, more generally\, to our way of being in the world? How can we make creative use of Nietzsche’s thought in our life and practice? Here is a little taste. The first step is embracing naturalism. This means giving primacy to nature and the body over consciousness. The latter needs to occupy\, in this naturalistic view\, a humbler position. Consciousness observes the body and the complexity of bodily affects and passions and then sends dispatches of this vast and complex felt text. Its relation to the body and the ‘instincts’\, consciousness is subordinate. It is an aspect of the instinctual life\, one that is not particularly better\, more moral\, or even fairer. What we call our thinking is also the result of a relationship between natural forces. ” Manu Bazzano \nThe course will be divided into three parts: \n(a)   We will look at the intrinsic intelligence of feelings\, emotions and passions\, comparing Nietzsche’s breakthrough insights about the Dionysian and the Apollonian dimensions with contemporary notions of eudaimonía or flourishing\, developed against more facile notions promoted by the ‘happiness’ industry. \n(b)   We will explore notions of time in relation to what Nietzsche calls eternal recurrence\, an exhilarating myth as well as a koan (or existential riddle)\, potentially useful in bringing forth a bold affirmation of existence and one that is intimately linked to a path of self-acceptance and deep appreciation of self-other-world. \n(c)    We will sketch two powerful and far-reaching themes from the Nietzschean corpus: 1) morality and its close link with the notion of the self as-we-know-it\, i.e. the Cartesian self and its various surrogates and dead ringers; 2) power\, reassessed\, paradoxically\, not as power over others (for Nietzsche a sign of weakness) but as active cultivation of vulnerability and generosity. \nPart One: 19th April\, 26th April and 3rd May.\nPart Two: 17th May\, 24th May and 31st May.\nPart Three: 14th June\, 21st June and 28th June \nNine Thursdays from 7pm to 9pm\nFee: £600 for the whole course

SUMMARY:SEMINAR: EXISTENTIAL GROUP WORK with Karen Weixel Dixon
DESCRIPTION:The proposal that Being-in-the-world is always being with others is one that provides a sound basis for therapeutic group work in the existential model: (12 participants max.) \n“Psychology is neither ‘individual’ nor ‘group’\, except by abstraction” S.H. Foulkes \nThe proposal that Being-in-the-world is always being-with-others is one that provides a sound basis for therapeutic group work in the existential model. \nNo-one can do nothing in a group: everyone is in some part\, and in some way\, responsible for the quality of relationship(s) that are created. What better stage on which to discover how you are experienced\, how clear or ambiguous are your communications\, and under what circumstances might you retain or modify your intentions and strategies of being-with-others? \nFacilitator and group members are all in this together. Anyone can be a participant/observer\, but in any case\, everyone is being and doing. \nPart 1 of this two-part CPD event will consider some queries about the nature of the format. Why group work? What are the therapeutic possibilities and what might be the risks  for both facilitators and members? How is it the same and different from individual work? \nIn discussing these we will refer to some existential proposals that are particularly relevant for group work; inter-subjectivity\, time\, choice\, uncertainty\, the self\, meaning/meaninglessness- to name a few. These topics will serve to illuminate the process of group work and what it offers in terms of an existential phenomenological endeavour. \nTheory and practice will be presented as aspects of an attitude that informs an existential model. This premise will facilitate explorations of such issues as: What is the role of the facilitator?  What is the responsibility of the members? What are the possibilities for therapeutic interactions and effects? What are the possible implications of facilitator styles? These proposals are likely to be complementary to any humanistic model of therapy and counselling. \nPart 1 and 2 of this series are interconnected\, but may be taken independently.\nSubsequent to a brief summary and review of the basic points explored in part 1\, part 2 of this CPD event will continue with an exploration of process and procedure. This will include the issue of themes\, in contrast to ‘problems’\, and ‘dialogue’\, in contrast to structured interventions. \nThere will also be an opportunity to consider the temporal stages of the group: beginning\, middle and end\, all of which may be characterised by similar qualities and difficulties. ‘Endings’ as an issue that is present from the very beginning of the group will be discussed as a significant factor in all human relationships. \nThere will be a presentation of an existential phenomenological theory of emotions\, what makes them important\, and how to work with them. A review of common difficulties with procedure\, such as boundary settings and with inter-personal engagements\, such as conflict and drop-outs\, will facilitate a deeper appreciation of these aspects. \nThese proposals are likely to be complementary to any humanistic model of therapy and counselling. \nThose in attendance will be welcome to offer their own experiences and questions. \nCome join us for a one day afternoon seminar that will provide both experiential and theoretical material for the facilitation of and participation in existential groupwork. \nSecond date 18 November 2017

SUMMARY:SELVES\, DIVIDED SELVES AND EXISTENTIAL PHENOMENOLOGY with Prof Ernesto Spinelli
DESCRIPTION:The question of ‘the self’ and the issues that it raises for psychotherapy is a persistent and seemingly irresolvable dilemma. \nMany of the assumptions regarding ‘the self’ that are maintained by psychotherapists and psychologists a reveal decidedly dominant Western cultural bias and emphasis. We tend to speak of ‘the self’ as an object or thing. Equally\, we imagine ‘the self’ as originating from within us in some way and serving as agent of our thoughts and behaviour. Further we assume ‘the self’ to be singular and to remain more or less constant over time. We claim to be able to distinguish ‘the real self’ from false\, or alien\, manifestations. We claim to be able to “lose” our self and\, perhaps with the aid of psychotherapy\, to “find” our self once again. \nAll of these ideas\, and many more like them\, seem somewhat obvious and common sensical to most of us in the West. But what if other\, less attractive but equally far more challenging ideas regarding ‘the self’ were to be considered? What would be their impact upon psychotherapeutic interventions or our psychological understanding of ‘self’ in general? \nThis two-day workshop considers the issue of ‘the self’ from the standpoint of contemporary contributions from the British School of Existential Analysis. These contributions combine various strands and strategies derived from contemporary phenomenology\, narrative theory and post-modern discourse. \nIn brief\, this alternative way of thinking about ‘the self’ challenges each and every one of our “common-sense” biases and assumptions. \nAccording to this existential-phenomenological approach\, human existence reveals ‘the total\, indissoluble unity or interrelationship of the individual and his or her world … In the truest sense\, the [self] is viewed as having no existence apart from the world and the world as having no existence apart from persons … (Valle and King\, 1989: 7) \nSuch a view rejects the trend in modern personality theories which seeks to categorize or `typologize’ individuals or which attempts to divide and reduce people in terms of various `parts’ or components. Instead\, it aims to remain at a descriptive and open-ended level of analysis of human experience. \nConsidered in such ways\, ‘the self’ can be seen to be more ‘process-like’ rather than a set of characteristics or components. As such\, when speaking of ‘the self’ what we might actually be doing is attempting to ‘capture’ or structure lived experience from a particular point of focus that we are calling ‘the self’. Narrative theory\, for instance\, speaks in terms of ‘storying’. More generally\, it might become more appropriate to consider and discuss ‘the self-structure’. \nThe workshops will focus on central areas of concern regarding ‘the self-structure’. \nThey will focus on such topics as: \nThe self-construct as the central structure of reflective experience.\nThe impact of rigid or sedimented beliefs regarding a self-structure.\nThe dissociation of experience as a consequence of sedimentations in the self-structure.\nThe experience of divided\, dissociated or multiple ‘selves’ reconsidered from the standpoint of sedimentations in the self-structure and dissociations from lived experience.\nThe reconsideration of ‘unconscious’ mechanisms as views from psycho-analytic perspectives from the standpoint of sedimentations in the self-structure and dissociations from lived experience.\nThe reconsideration of ‘real’ versus ‘false’ manifestations of ‘the self’ sedimentations in the self-structure and dissociations from lived experience.\nWorking psychotherapeutically with the self-structure. \nDates: 28/1/2017 and 4/3/2017
