Project Description
Dr Mana Barnett, BSc (Hons), MSc, DPsych, CPsychol, Chartered Psychologist & Psychotherapist, BPS accredited and HCPC registered
Empathy, warmth, and curiosity are human qualities I very much value. They are central to the way I work as a therapist, enabling me to foster strong therapeutic relationships in a safe, confidential space where clients can feel understood and supported.
I work collaboratively with my clients to help them gain a deeper understanding of themselves, their experiences and difficulties, and to facilitate an authentic engagement with the process of growth and meaningful change. In recognising that each person and their lived experience is unique, I strive to maintain an open and curious attitude rather than being guided by assumptions.
My overarching therapeutic approach is Existential-Phenomenological Therapy. This approach considers the principles of relatedness, uncertainty, and existential anxiety as fundamental to the human condition and therefore crucial to the investigation and interpretation of the challenges we face (Spinelli, 2007). It aims to increase clients’ understanding of their current difficulties and distress through descriptively clarifying their experiences and worldview.
By identifying and challenging both explicit and implicit assumptions within clients’ narratives, I help them explore alternative perspectives and different ways of relating to themselves and their circumstances. Where change is desired, I help clients work towards meaningful change. When circumstances cannot be changed, I support clients to cultivate acceptance and discover new ways of relating to their problems, enabling them to live more authentically with (and in spite of) ongoing challenges.
My experience of working within a multi-disciplinary team at University College London Hospital (UCLH) was instrumental in shaping how I conceptualise people’s emotional and psychological health within a wider context of any biological, social, familial, and environmental issues. I believe in taking a holistic view of the person, considering how all aspects of their life contribute to their well-being and sense of self.
Whilst my approach is broadly existential, I utilise my psychological knowledge and training to draw on and integrate a range of therapeutic frameworks, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Attachment-based Therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and solution-focused therapies – to meet the individual needs of my clients.
